New Reviews - Jets to Zurich, Evening Chorus and Spider Kitten

Album

Jets to Zurich - Atmospheric Sound Cycles

Debut album from Aberdare boys Jets to Zurich is a pretty interesting listen. With instrumental opener The Trigger setting the rest of the album up nicely with its heavy riffs, blending nicely into Buzzkiller, with definite traces of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden this song is a perfect starter and is arguably the best song on the album. Tracks such as Overdriver and Around the Sun encompass the vocal melodies of early Nirvana but with a more melodic and indier feel.

Tracks Ghosts of Arizona and Longwave take a break from the general grungey riffness of the rest of the album to show that these guys can do more than just make noise. Dale Hawkins vocals are strecthed during both tracks but blends in nicely with the guitars. This Town ain't Vegas (this town is dead) is straight out of the nirvana school of noise, with Hawkins voice maybe a little weak at times against such strong riffs.

Closer No Alternative ends the album on a definite high note, starting with a nice slow melody of strings and then kicking in with some good strong riffs, Hawkins vocals sounds much better during this tracks and recalls Chirs Cornell at times with the roughness of his voice. Damn good end.

All in all I would say this is a pretty good first offering from Jets to Zurich, heavy riffs throughout showing the influence of grunge but in a more indie and melodic way.  Hawkins vocals are at times stretched and made to sound weak on certain tracks but Buzzkiller and No Alternative definetly make up for this.

If you like your Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and early Blur then I would def give this album a listen.
Not too bad. Definite potential.

Single

Evening Chorus - 'No Wreath,No Crown + Blistered Magnolia

Now here at Release Thee Bats we like our noise, we like it big and ballsy and we like plenty of it, but it comes a time in everybodies lives when after way too many rums we need to mellow out, we need to chill, we need to folk it up.   Well this is that time, and after the nice folks Evening Chorus sent us their new double single 'No Wreath,No Crown + Blistered Magnolia we thought we would give it a gander, and I must say that we enjoyed our gander.

The lead single No Wreath,No Crown recalls and easily matches Mumford and Sons with its beautiful vocals backed up by quaint but effective accoustic guitars, The 2nd single Blistered Magnolia recalls Jay Jay Pistolet and Johnny Flynn, with the kind of harmonies you can easily get lost to.

I guess the saying of less means more applies very much to Evening Chorus and they have applied that theory to great effect here.  There's a lot of very good folk bands in Wales at the moment and Evening Chorus are as good as any of them . Very nice indeed

EP
Spider Kitten - Science Insults Your Intelligence

Yet another release from the awesome Welsh drone metallers Spider Kitten and after listening to this EP you may need a few minutes to chill out and reflect on what has just happened.

Right from the start the eerie darkness of the record surrounds you and pulls you in and  the ambient drones that flow through this EP are reminiscent of Earth and Sunn O))) and its obvious that both bands are of heavy influence.

Starting with the guitar heavy feedback of The Sun is a Light 32 Miles Across and ending with the ambient noise of Gravity Does Not Exist this record's doom laden sounds will attach themselves to you and refuse to let go.

In a land of hardcore and metal bands it is nice to hear someone doing something a little bit different.

So if you like Earth,Sunn O))) and The for Carnation then I would definetly recommend this EP to you. Plus it's totally free.
